“The Holy One, Blessed be He, said, ‘I will not enter the heavenly Jerusalem until I can enter the earthly Jerusalem’, [meaning until there is holiness in the Jerusalem on earth]. [The Gemara asks:] Is there a Jerusalem above? [The Gemara answers:] Yes. For it says, ‘The built-up Jerusalem is like the city with which it is joined together’ (Psalms 122:3) [meaning: Jerusalem on earth is modelled after its prototype in heaven].”
